Kim Jong-un to Lead North Korea

North Korea is preparing its biggest political gathering in 30 years, fuelling speculation Kim Jong-il may use the forum to legitimatise a transfer of power to his youngest son, Kim Jong-u, as his own takeover was ensured at a 1980 summit. Delegates from the ruling Workers Party of Korea held meetings in the past week before the congress to pledge loyalty to Mr Kim, according to the official Korean Central News Agency. Troops and tanks had been deployed near the capital for military parades to mark the gathering, South Korea's Defence Ministry said. Mr Kim, 68, last month made his second trip to China this year in a possible effort to win the endorsement of his closest ally for the power transfer.
